Your Walk to Health

There is no resolution better than that which can aid well being & create wealth. Though we are past the First of January, a day when many of us would have taken some ‘New Year Resolutions’, I believe it isn’t too late as of yet to take a resolution to keep ourselves in good health. The best wealth one can possess is one’s own & family’s health.

You may have anticipated from the title itself, this article is on regular brisk walk. It is a natural and inexpensive exercise which is known to have great impact on Physical and Mental well being. Walking for about 40 minutes a day under the rising sun stimulates the body and mind simultaneously and imparts an immense feeling of well being.

A brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis can do a world of good to your health. It can reduce the bad cholesterol & increase the level of good Cholesterol. It can improve your cardio vascular fitness & reduce the risk of heart attacks. Regular walking reduces blood sugar and fat levels, relieves constipation & improves bowel health. It can also win you some great friends at the park too!!

Great results can be derived, if the following guidelines are observed.

1] Dress Code- Select a pair of comfortable sport shoes along with a cotton trouser and a T-shirt or a sports jacket. Having the right dress code itself will induce a great feeling and motivate one to undertake an effective walk

2] Warming Up- Warm up your body, and do some moderate stretching exercise before a brisk walk.

3] Start Up-Start walking slowly, may be 10 minutes on the first day. Increase the duration progressively, and reach about 40 minutes per day & 5 days a week.

4] Breath Control-Walk briskly but not to the extent you feel uncomfortable or difficult to breathe. You should be able to talk without difficulty.

5] Posture-Keep the head up and central of shoulders. Look straight and keep the shoulders relaxed. Keep the abdominal muscle pulled in and have an upright posture Do not lean forward.

6] Arms & Fists-Arms should be kept close to the body, while elbows should be kept at right angles. Keep the hands relaxed & avoid making tight fists. Arms may be kept in motion swinging front and back in pace with the stride of opposite leg.

7] Strides-Make moderate strides and avoid long ones. Keep the hip active as most of the motion should start from the hips. Be energetic & pleasant.

8] Steps-Each step may be landed gently on the heel & mid foot, rolled to push off with the toes. The balls of feet and toes should be pushed forward with each step.

9] Relax- It is suggested to relax for about 10 minutes after a brisk walk. It is best done under the shade of some trees. Allow the medicinal rays of the rising sun to cleanse your skin and body and natural breeze to provide a soothing touch.

Though we have been taught from childhood that ‘Health is Wealth’ we tend to forget it every time in our ever lasting quest to Wealth! Hope your resolution for a good health remains in you forever!!
